Returning to civilian life after military service comes with challenges—both seen and unseen. At Heart of the Horse Therapy Ranch, we help veterans navigate this transition through the healing power of horses. Our program is built on a simple but transformative belief: veterans helping veterans creates a space where trust, understanding, and recovery can thrive. Many of our volunteers are veterans themselves—people who’ve walked this path, who know the weight of silence and the value of connection. They serve not only as guides but as living proof that healing is possible.
Through equine-assisted sessions, participants form deep bonds with their horses—relationships rooted in nonverbal communication, mutual respect, and patience. Like the veterans they work with, horses respond to calm leadership and authentic presence. As each rider learns to guide their horse, they also strengthen their own skills in focus, memory, emotional regulation, and confidence—tools essential for navigating PTSD, anxiety, and the invisible wounds of service. But this is more than therapy. It’s a return to community—a place where veterans support each other, rediscover their purpose, and walk forward—together—with renewed strength and a sense of belonging.
Veterans are expected to be consistent and committed to the therapeutic process. More than one no call/no show will result in removal from the program to honor the time and resources dedicated to each participant. This program is for those looking to reclaim strength, process experiences, and move forward through the unique healing power of horses—not for those seeking speed, competition, or traditional riding lessons. At Heart of the Horse, we don’t just serve veterans—we honor them. The V.E.T.S. Program is a safe place to land, connect, and heal—with no pressure, and no cost.
